Dodgers wrap up second game against Twins, 4-3, in 12 innings

KEY MOMENT: Scott Van Slyke, who scored the Dodgers’ first run after tripling off the top of the center-field wall in the sixth, scored the tiebreaking run six innings later when he homered leading off the 12th. Drew Butera, who played parts of four seasons with the Twins, gave the Dodgers what looked to be some insurance with a long home run two outs later. It was the first homer by a Dodgers catcher this season and, after Minnesota rallied for a run in the bottom of the inning, it proved to the be the game-winner.

AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers got 11 hits and drew 12 walks but wasted most of that by going two for 13 with runners in scoring position, stranding 16 runners. Yasiel Puig, Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez and Van Slyke each had two hits with Gonzalez’s game-tying homer in the seventh giving him a league-leading nine for the season.

ON THE MOUND: After giving up hits to the first two batters he faced in his major league career, Red Patterson settled down and didn’t give up another over the rest of his 4 2/3-inning debut. And the only run he gave up came home on an out. The Dodgers bullpen was almost as good, with five relievers combining to hold Minnesota to one earned run and four hits over the final 7 1/3 innings.

EXTRA BASES: Puig had reached base in nine consecutive plate appearances before grounding out to start the fifth. But he finished the game with two hits and was six for 10 in the doubleheader, raising his average 33 points to .309. … Thursday’s doubleheader was the Dodgers’ ninth since 2002. They have split four, swept two and been swept three times. … Throwing errors by Juan Uribe and Brandon League on back-to-back plays in the bottom of the sixth gave the Dodgers five errors in the doubleheader and a league-worst 31 in 29 games this season. … Dee Gordon stole his MLB-leading 15th base in the 12th.

UP NEXT: After leaving the frozen tundra of Minneapolis, the Dodgers were scheduled to get to their hotel rooms at about dawn Friday. But there were probably few complaints since those hotel rooms are in Miami (Friday forecast: high of 88 degrees, low of 77). In the opener of their three-game series with Miami, the Dodgers will start a former Marlin, right-hander Josh Beckett, the MVP of Florida’s 2003 World Series triumph.
