Security Is Under Review

The Dodgers say they do not plan to attempt to identify or punish a fan who grabbed the jersey of Colorado left fielder Matt Holliday in the seventh inning of Friday’s game at Dodger Stadium, even though Dodger officials conceded Sunday that they should have ejected the fan.

“If our security staff had seen the replay at the time, they would have ejected the fan,” a Dodger spokesman said. “From their vantage point, they couldn’t tell whether the fan had interfered with [Holliday].”

The fan grabbed Holliday’s jersey after the outfielder had retrieved J.D. Drew’s two-run home run, which had deflected off fans in the front row and back onto the field.

The Dodgers apologized to Colorado Manager Clint Hurdle, and an investigator from Major League Baseball’s security office arrived at Dodger Stadium on Sunday to review the team’s security procedures.

Colorado players said the fan who touched Holliday should have suffered the same fate as the Boston Red Sox fan who had his season-ticket privileges revoked after interfering with New York Yankee outfielder Gary Sheffield in a game at Fenway Park on April 14.

“It’s no different,” Colorado center fielder Preston Wilson told The Denver Post. “They know who the guy was. He grabbed Matt and he’s high-fiving his friends. Come on.”

Dodger Manager Jim Tracy gave Milton Bradley, in a one-for-12 rut, the day off and moved J.D. Drew from right field to center to give Drew’s surgically repaired knee a break from making abrupt stops while chasing balls hit into the right-field corner. Jason Repko replaced Drew in right.... Eric Gagne, recovering from a sprained elbow, will complete a minor league rehabilitation assignment before making his season debut, Tracy said. The closer threw 35 pitches Sunday during a bullpen session in which he used all his pitches -- fastball, changeup, curveball and slider. Gagne will throw in the bullpen again and face Dodger hitters in a simulated game before embarking on the rehab assignment. ... Wilson Alvarez (left shoulder tendinitis) threw what he described as a light bullpen session and is expected to be activated today or Tuesday. ... Tracy conceded that pitcher Darren Dreifort, recovering from surgeries on his left hip and right knee, might not pitch this season. “My guess would be no,” Tracy said. “You wonder if Dreif is ever going to pitch again.”
