Houston 9, at San Diego 6: The Astros’ Lance Berkman hit a three-run homer off closer Trevor Hoffman with two outs in the ninth inning. With the Padres leading, 6-5, Hoffman retired the first two batters before walking pinch-hitter Jose Cruz Jr. Michael Bourn singled to right and Hunter Pence followed with a single to score Cruz. Berkman drove a 3-and-1 pitch over the center-field fence, and Hoffman was pulled.

Washington 1, at Philadelphia 0: Tim Redding took a one-hitter into the eighth inning and Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homer to lead the Nationals, who are 3-0 for the first time since 2003, when they were the Montreal Expos. Redding gave up just a single by Pedro Feliz in the second.

at St. Louis 8, Colorado 3: Cardinals center fielder Rick Ankiel homered, singled twice and made a diving catch in the victory. The Cardinals’ regular-season sellout streak ended at 165 games with an announced attendance of 39,915 in 51-degree weather.

at Cincinnati 6, Arizona 5: Edwin Encarnacion hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Reds. Arizona took a 5-3 lead into the ninth, but Brandon Lyon, who took over the closer’s role after Jose Valverde was traded in the off-season, let the lead get away.

Milwaukee 8, at Chicago 2: Jeff Suppan held the Cubs to two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings and Jason Kendall reached base five consecutive times for the Brewers.

New York 13, at Florida 0: Ryan Church and David Wright homered, Carlos Beltran had three doubles and the Mets collected 17 hits in support of pitcher Oliver Perez, who gave up five hits in six innings.

at Atlanta 10, Pittsburgh 2: Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer and Yunel Escobar had a three-run homer in the Braves’ seven-run eighth inning.

San Francisco at Dodgers, late: After a rain delay, the Giants took a 2-1 lead that they held through 6 1/2 innings.
