Clippers sign another Davis

Luckily for the Clippers, there was still ink left in their pen Monday, when they capped a frenetic free-agency period by signing swingman Ricky Davis.

Davis, 28, has averaged 14.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 10 seasons. He was the only Miami Heat player to play in all 82 games last season.

He is considered a gifted scorer, but has also butted heads with coaches.

“There are things Ricky can do very well,” said Elgin Baylor, Clippers vice president of basketball operations. “He can score and shoot beyond the perimeter. That’s a good addition, to have a player that can do those things. It’s also going to take some of the defensive pressure off our post players.”

Davis signed a one-year contract with a player option for a second season. The signing brings the Clippers’ team salary to the tip of the league’s salary cap at $58.6 million. It also brings closure to a busy off-season for the team.

The Clippers have retooled and reshuffled, losing mainstays Elton Brand and Corey Maggette, ushering in free-agent guard Baron Davis and trading for center-forward Marcus Camby. They also swapped backup point guards with the Utah Jazz, acquiring Jason Hart for a second tenure in exchange for Brevin Knight.

Only center Chris Kaman and guard Cuttino Mobley remain from the team that was on the verge of reaching the Western Conference finals in the 2005-06 season.

The Clippers can still sign players to minimum contracts, and they are in talks to retain rehabilitating point guard Shaun Livingston and forward Paul Davis, both unrestricted free agents.

And they must also decide this week whether to pick up a team option on forward Josh Powell.

The Clippers also have had talks with free-agent center Francisco Elson, 32, who has played for three teams in five NBA seasons.
