Thomas prepares to step in for Brand

SANTA BARBARA -- Tim Thomas was on vacation but still found a way to work.

Over the summer, Thomas went to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and ran two miles in the sand each morning in preparation for the season.

Thomas, 6 feet 10 and 240 pounds, is expected to slide into the starting spot for the Clippers at power forward while injured Elton Brand rehabilitates.

“Starting is something you always look forward to,” Thomas said. “It’s unfortunate what happened to EB, but at the same time it’s an opportunity for me and I have to go out and take advantage of it.”

Last season, Thomas was the primary long-range shooter off the bench and a matchup problem because of his size and shooting ability.

Coach Mike Dunleavy often exploited opposing post players that were not comfortable playing defense against Thomas on the perimeter.

Thomas averaged 11 points and five rebounds, although his shooting was erratic because of nagging injuries.

After learning of Brand’s injury, Thomas increased his meals from two to four a day and added five pounds, bulking up to be able to play down low.

“Last year I felt as though I was always outside the three-point line and either shooting a lot of threes or feeding the post,” Thomas said.

“This year I want to mix it up a little bit -- get down low and step out and shoot the three as well.”

And he may also be taking on a larger leadership role.

While scrimmaging Tuesday, Thomas came behind forward Yaroslav Korolev, blocking his layup attempt.

During a water break, Thomas approached Korolev, a third-year player, and counseled him on how to better shield his body to make the shot or get fouled.

“Always in the beginning of the year there is a level of excitement,” Thomas said. “There’s a level of nerves to get things started and even though this is my 10th year, I still feel the same way as in my first year.”

Dunleavy said young forwards Al Thornton and Josh Powell have impressed in camp.

Thornton, the team’s top pick from Florida State, will probably find himself in the rotation early in the season.

Powell, who split last season with the Indiana Pacers and the Golden State Warriors, probably will be among the first big men off the bench.

“Josh Powell, Al Thornton have played really well for us,” Dunleavy said.

NBA group supervisor Tommy Nunez, a former referee, visited camp to discuss the official’s point of emphasis, such as hand checking and illegal defense. . . . Forward Aaron Williams (sore left hamstring) did not practice, but Sam Cassell (sore left knee) returned to practice. . . . The Clippers will hold a scrimmage at Santa Barbara City College today at 2 p.m. though the event is sold out. Afterward, they return to Los Angeles. Their first exhibition game is Tuesday at Denver.
