Lakers react to early-morning earthquake

Los Angeles was hit by a magnitude 4.4 earthquake early Monday morning, with an epicenter five miles from Westwood.

As the Lakers prepared to practice later in the morning, talk turned to the quake.

“I felt it right at 6:30 [a.m. PDT], it kept on growing and growing and I almost said, ‘I’m running out of my back door right now,’” said player-development coach Mark Madsen.

Technically the quake hit at 6:25 a.m.

“Yeah, it woke me up. Somebody hit the massage button,” joked Pau Gasol. “It’s fun to tell everyone, ‘Hey, you felt it? You felt it?’”

Coach Mike D’Antoni hasn’t been in Los Angeles long, so this was somewhat of a new experience for him.

“One of the first I ever felt here,” said D’Antoni. “I was in the shower, so I couldn’t panic.”

Madsen undoubtedly felt it the strongest at his home in Westwood.

“I think the epicenter was probably right beneath my house, it certainly felt like it,” he said. “I grew up feeling earthquakes, but I haven’t felt a good one in a long time. I felt that one this morning.”

Gasol said he was thankful that the quakes he’s felt during his Lakers’ tenure have been light.

“Hopefully there won’t be anything more than what we’ve experienced the last few years,” Gasol said.
