Lakers’ Steve Nash hurts his back moving bags

Life at 40 has not been easy for Steve Nash.

Nash managed to play through a quarter of the Lakers’ preseason 116-75 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday before asking to be taken out because, according to Coach Byron Scott, “He just didn’t feel right.”

The NBA’s oldest player hasn’t practiced since, missing Wednesday’s practice because of an off-court tweak at his Manhattan Beach home.

“Steve, today, kind of hurt his back,” said Scott. “He had a little bit of a setback, just kind of carrying some bags or something. He [felt] a twinge in his back.”

Nash has missed most of his first two seasons with the Lakers dealing with back, knee and hamstring issues.

He won’t play on Thursday when the Lakers host the Utah Jazz in Anaheim.

According to Scott, Jeremy Lin is “50-50” to play against Utah as he recovers from a sprained ankle. The point guard has increased his activity in practice and could be the starter for the Lakers this season given Nash’s recurring health concerns.

Veteran Ronnie Price would start at point guard if Lin is unable to go.

Xavier Henry didn’t have a setback, after ramping up his activity as he tries to return from back spasms, but Scott said he was sore and sat out practice Wednesday as well.

Both Ryan Kelly (hamstring) and Jordan Clarkson (calf) may play on Sunday when the Lakers host the Jazz at Staples Center.

Nick Young participated in conditioning drills but is still out for at least a month after thumb surgery.
