Terps wrestler Sheptock earns ACC weekly honors
Maryland junior Jimmy Sheptock earned Atlantic Coast Conference co-Wrestler of the Week honors after posting a 4-1 record and placing second at the Nittany Lion Open, the conference announced Tuesday. Sheptock, the 10th-ranked wrestler in the country at 184 pounds, defeated 19th-ranked Alex Utley of North Carolina, 8-3, in the quarterfinals before knocking off 14th-ranked Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers, 2-0, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Sheptock lost an 11-4 decision to top-ranked Ed Ruth of Penn State, the 174-pound national champion in 2012.
Women's indoor track and field: Loyola freshman Uchechukwu Emili was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Performer of the Week. Emili set a school record in the indoor weight throw in her first college meet, recording a mark of 36 feet, 9 inches at the Lehigh Season Opener on Friday night. ... UMBC sophomore Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown) was honored as the America East Female Track Performer of the Week. ... McDaniel freshman Chloe Allen-Gorman was named Centennial Conference Track Athlete of the Week.
Men's indoor track and field: Junior Julian Saliani was selected as the Centennial Conference Track Athlete of the Week after breaking the Johns Hopkins record in the 3,000-meter run Saturday at the Navy Invitational. He finished in 8 minutes, 37.88 seconds, beating the previous mark of 8:44.81. ... McDaniel sophomore Jordan Birden (Cristo Rey Jesuit), was named Centennial Conference Field Athlete of the Week.
Wizards stun Heat, 105-101, for second win of season
Jordan Crawford had 22 points and six assists off the bench and fellow reserve Kevin Seraphin added 16 points and 10 rebounds to help the host Washington Wizards upset the visiting Miami Heat, 105-101. The Wizards (2-13) overcame 26 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists from LeBron James in ending the Heat's six-game winning streak. James missed two 3-pointers and two free throws late as Miami (12-4) tried to rally.
