AUGUSTA, Ga. – Arnold Palmer hit the first ceremonial tee shot into the fog off the first tee at Augusta National. Then Gary Player blasted one. And, finally, Jack Nicklaus, who joked that he was able to hear the ball land.
“Not a good sign,” he said.
Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne would herald in a new year by telling the spectators: “Ladies and Gentlemen, the 2013 Masters has begun. Have fun.”
Nicklaus later did an interview with CBS, saying of Tiger Woods: "If you had to list your favorites, Tiger would be No. 1 on the list."
Woods, who tees off at 10:45 a.m. ET with Northwestern alum Luke Donald and Las Vegas native Scott Piercy, has won 14 major championships. That’s four shy of Nicklaus’ all-time mark.
“If he wins this week,” Nicklaus said, “I think he will be well on his way.”
The clouds are expected to dissipate in the late morning, but there is a 30 percent chance of rain this afternoon.
