USC gets bounced from Pac-12 tournament by Colorado

Haley Smith scored 16, and Jamee Swan added 15 and four blocked shots to help No. 9 seed Colorado women beat eighth-seeded USC 75-63 in the opening round of the Pac-12 Conference tournament on Thursday night.

Lexy Kresl had 12 points and seven assists and Lauren Huggins scored 11 for Colorado (14-16), which will face top-seeded and No. 8-ranked Oregon State in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Colorado, which made 25 of 47 (53.2 percent) field goals and 20 of 23 free throws, took a 39-27 lead into halftime as USC (15-15) shot just 22.9 percent (8 of 35) in the first 20 minutes.

The Trojans pulled within six on three occasions early in the second, but Huggins scored eight — including a pair of 3-pointers — during a 16-6 run which gave the Buffaloes a 67-51 lead with 6:45 to play.

Washington 75, Utah 64: Jazmine Davis and Kelsey Plum combined to score 35 of their 52 points in the second half on Thursday night to help No. 5 seed Washington women beat 12th-seeded Utah 75-64 in the first round of the Pac-12 Conference tournament.

Davis finished with 29 points, Plum scored 23 and Aminah Williams grabbed 11 rebounds for Washington (23-8), which will face No. 4 seed California in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Tanaeya Boclair and Joseta Fatuesi hit two free throws apiece to pull Utah (9-21) within three with 3:21 left, but Plum scored seven straight before Davis made a pair of free throws to make it 73-61 with 46 seconds remaining.

Fatuesi had 16 points and nine rebounds for Utah, which made just 5 of 20 from 3-point range.

Davis moved into sixth on the Pac-12 career scoring list with 2,240 points. Plum took over first on the conference’s single-season free throws made list (210) and eighth on its single-season scoring list (735).
