Anthony Stover, a 6-foot-9 senior center from Los Angeles Windward High, gave his verbal commitment to UCLA this morning according to his mother, Rena.

Stover had narrowed his choices to Arizona, Arizona State, Creighton and UCLA, and Thursday night Rena Stover said the family -- Anthony's father, Craig; sister Amber, who attends Santa Monica College; brother Nicholas, a freshman at Windward; plus Rena and Anthony went into what Rena described as "the war room."

"We decided to all sit down together and make this decision as a family," Rena said. "Each of us got to give our opinion and in the end it was UCLA. The opportunity to play here at home, go to an amazing academic university, to have a chance to graduate in three and a half years with a major he wants, that all counted."

Rena Stover said UCLA assistant Scott Garson also played a big role in the UCLA choice.

"Scott showed an interest early in Anthony," Rena said. "It took Coach [Ben Howland] a little bit of time to come around, but once he had the chance to see Anthony play in person he was on board."

According to Greg Hicks of Scout.com, Stover is one of the top center prospects on the West Coast and is a particularly strong shot blocker.

Stover joins top-100 forward/wing prospects Tyler Honeycutt of Sylmar High, Reeves Nelson of Modesto Christian High and Brendan Lane from Rocklin High as committed to sign with UCLA for the 2009 season. Signing day is next month.
