Rankman’s pipe dream of Stanford and Northwestern meeting in the BCS title game at the Rose Bowl is over. Gone is the utopian idea two schools with integrity and academic standards might also compete on football’s grandest stage. We’re left now with a No. 1, 2 and 3 in various stages of NCAA inquiry. Alabama prays an ineligible player won’t force vacation of its last two titles, Oregon has been given a scholarship haircut thanks to Chip Kelly, while Ohio State is just now out of bowl jail after getting tattooed by the NCAA. Stanford tumbled nine spots from No. 1 after leaving a dream season on the goal line at Utah. Poor Northwestern was 10 minutes from upsetting Ohio State last week but the Wildcats have had to be put down. Harvard is leading the Ivy League and would have been an inspired new choice for No.1 …100 years ago. We’ll continue to scour for viable alternatives but until then “How about those Clemson Tigers!”
