College football: What to watch Saturday on TV

MORNING

No. 2 Florida State (8-0) at Wake Forest (4-5)

9 a.m., Channel 7

Is it possible Florida State could have a let down one week after its emphatic win over Miami, against an inferior Wake Forest team? Wake Forest has won four of the last seven games in the series. The Demon Deacons shocked Florida State in Tallahassee, 30-0, in 2006, and then two years later, 12-3. Ah, who are we kidding? This is a great Florida State team who won last year’s game, 52-0.

No. 9 Auburn (8-1) at Tennessee (4-5)

9 a.m., ESPN

Auburn has been one of this year’s biggest surprises considering the Tigers narrowly won their home opener against Washington State. Tennessee showed some spunk in taking Georgia to overtime and then upsetting South Carolina. Since then, though, the Volunteers have been wiped out by Alabama and Missouri by the combined score of 76-13.

9 a.m.: Vanderbilt at Florida, Prime; James Madison at New Hampshire, NBCSN; Missouri at Kentucky, ESPNU; Western Kentucky at Army, CBSSN; Iowa at Purdue, BTN; Texas Christian at Iowa State, FS West; Penn State at Minnesota, ESPN2.

AFTERNOON

Brigham Young (6-2) at No. 24 Wisconsin (6-2)

Noon, ESPN

This is a good matchup between teams that have had strange seasons. BYU lost to lowly Virginia but has defeated Texas and Boise State. BYU quarterback Taysom Hill has passed for 2,019 yards and is also a dynamic runner who torched Texas for 259 yards. Wisconsin lost to Ohio State by a touchdown and might be a top-10 team if not for a controversial loss at Arizona State.

Nebraska (6-2) at Michigan (6-2)

12:30 p.m., Channel 7

What looked like a game with Big Ten implications is now an unranked battle for program respect. Nebraska needed a Hail Mary pass to defeat Northwestern in Lincoln last week, while Michigan had minus-48 yards rushing in a loss to arch-rival Michigan State.

No. 22 Arizona State (6-2) at Utah (4-4)

1 p.m, Pac-12 Network

Arizona State Coach Todd Graham and son Bo are just happy to be alive after surviving a harrowing plane ride on a recruiting trip to Texas. Utah doesn’t have a great record but is dangerous at home, where the Utes defeated Stanford and played Oregon State and UCLA close.

Virginia Tech (6-3) at No. 11 Miami (7-1)

4 p.m., ESPN

Miami lost to Florida State but still leads the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division over Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. A win over Virginia Tech would put Miami in good shape to earn an ACC rematch against Florida State.

Noon: USC at California, Channel 11.

12:30 p.m.: Mississippi State at Texas A&M, Channel 2; Illinois at Indiana, BTN; Hawaii at Navy, CBSSN; Syracuse at Maryland, Prime.

12:45 p.m.: Tulsa at East Carolina, FS West.

No. 13 Louisiana State (7-2) at No. 1 Alabama (8-0)

5 p.m., Channel 2

This is the latest in a series of games between the top programs from the SEC West. LSU stunned Alabama in Tuscaloosa two years ago but Alabama got revenge in the BCS title game. Last year, LSU was less than a minute from another win over Alabama when the Crimson Tide scored the game-winning touchdown.

No. 23 Notre Dame (7-2) at Pittsburgh (4-4)

5 p.m., Channel 7

Last year Pitt missed a field goal in overtime that could have/should have knocked Notre Dame out of the national title race. The Irish are not in the championship chase this season but need three wins to reach the 10-win plateau and that would likely earn them a major bowl bid.

No. 12 Fresno State (8-0) at Wyoming (4-4)

7:15 p.m., ESPN2

Fresno State’s bid for a BCS berth continues with this high-altitude test in Laramie. At more than 7,000 feet, War Memorial Stadium is the highest venue in major college football and the forecast calls for a low temperature of 30 degrees. Fresno State is off to its best start since opening 10-0 in 1989 but is 0-3 in games played at Wyoming. The Cowboys, though, have lost 19 straight games to top-25 opponents.

5 p.m.: Colorado at Washington, Pac-12; Utah State at Nevada Las Vegas, ESPNU.

7 p.m.: UCLA at Arizona, ESPN.

7:30 p.m.: San Diego State at San Jose State, CBSSN.
