Texas Coach Mack Brown denies he plans to resign

Texas Athletic Director Steve Patterson said no decision has been made about the future of Longhorns football Coach Mack Brown.

Texas released a statement by Patterson several hours after Orangebloods.com reported, citing two unidentified people, that Brown will announce he is stepping down by week’s end.

“We continue to discuss the future of Texas Football,” Patterson said. “Mack Brown has not resigned. And, no decisions have been made.”

Joe Jamail, Brown’s longtime friend and attorney, told the Associated Press on Tuesday: “Mack Brown has not resigned.” He said Brown’s future with Texas is still up to the coach.

Horns247.com, a Texas recruiting website, reported that Brown denied the report in a text from Florida, where he was recruiting.

Brown wrote to Horns247: “I have not decided to step down.”

Texas just completed another regular season that didn’t meet expectations. The Longhorns are 8-4, recovering from a 1-2 start and beating Oklahoma, but still finishing with lopsided late-season losses to Oklahoma State and Baylor.

Reigning Olympic men’s figure skating champion Evan Lysacek will miss the Sochi Games because of torn cartilage in his left hip.

Lysacek tore the cartilage, along with a muscle in his abdomen, during a hard fall in August. He pursued an aggressive course of treatment and returned to the ice in October. But the “excruciating pain” intensified as he increased his training, and doctors told him last week that he was risking permanent damage if he continued.

Lysacek made his announcement Tuesday on the “Today” show. Earlier, he told the AP he’s “crushed” at not being able to compete and represent the United States in Sochi.

The America’s Cup sailing races this year generated far less economic activity in the San Francisco Bay Area than projected, and have cost taxpayers more than $5 million, a newspaper reported.

Draft figures from the Bay Area Council Economic Institute reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle show the races generated at least $364 million in economic impact. That figure rises to $550 million if the construction of a cruise ship terminal is factored in.

That is far below the $900 million projected a few months before the races were set to begin and the $1.4 billion originally estimated in 2010.
