Dodgers agree to terms with first-round pick Ethan Martin
The right-hander is expected to get a signing bonus of about $1.7 million.
The Dodgers have agreed on the terms of a contract with first-round draft pick Ethan Martin, according to B.B. Abbott of Jet Sports Management, which represents the 19-year old right-hander. Martin underwent a physical today and is expected to sign a deal on Friday that will pay him a signing bonus of about $1.7 million.
Martin, who will be a guest of the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium tonight for the second consecutive night, is scheduled to report to the club’s rookie-level affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.
Martin, who was also a standout third baseman in high school, was involved in a controversy in the Georgia Class AAA championship game that Martin’s Stephens County High dropped to Cartersville, 13-1. The incident in question took place in the fourth inning, when Martin’s brother, junior pitcher Cody, threw a fastball that struck the home plate umpire when the catcher ducked out of the way. Ethan Martin had argued a strike three call in the top half of that inning.
The pitch that hit the umpire was captured on video and posted on YouTube. It ultimately resulted in the Georgia High School Assn.’s fining Stephens County $1,000 and placing the baseball program on “severe warning.”
