UPDATE: The Lumberjacks have won 28 consecutive games, though it came against opponents that might cause come college basketball analysts to scoff (attention Jay Bilas). Yet, the Lumberjacks showed their mettle in rallying from a 11-point second half deficit to beat fifth-seeded Virginia Commonwealth in overtime Friday_an overtime made possible by Desmond Haymon’s four-point play with three seconds left. The Lumberjacks are very disciplined and showed no signs of panic against VCU, or awe at being in the NCAA tournament. They may have an intramural-team-look against the Bruins, but they have five players who average in double figures. The Lumberjacks also seem equally comfortable pushing the tempo and playing half-court sets. UCLA had an uneven performance in its NCAA opener, but that was good enough to beat Tulsa, 76-59. The Bruins also got a strong inside boost off the bench from center Tony Parker, who had 11 points, making five of seven shots, and six rebounds. Parker could be a big factor against a short S.F. Austin team.
