UCLA Coach Jim L. Mora is building his staff

Jim L. Mora, hired as UCLA’s coach Friday, is quickly assembling his staff.

Arizona State’s Noel Mazzone will be the Bruins’ offensive coordinator, Southern Methodist’s Adrian Klemm the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator, Washington assistant Demetrice Martin will coach the defensive backs and Arizona State assistant Steve Broussard will work with the receivers.

Martin and Broussard had already reached out to UCLA players.

“It got a little different yesterday,” defensive back Randall Carroll said. “After we met with Coach Mora, a lot of guys started getting phone calls from coaches who said they talked to Coach Mora about being assistants.”

Martin will begin recruiting for the Bruins immediately. Broussard will remain at Arizona State until after Sun Devils play Boise State in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22. Klemm was expected to be in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Klemm and Martin have ties to the fertile Los Angeles recruiting ground.

Klemm played at Santa Monica St. Monica High and has been an effective Southern California recruiter for SMU. Martin played at Pasadena Muir High and has recruited the area for Washington. He also was a graduate assistant at USC in 2007 and 2008.

Mazzone has worked at Mississippi, Auburn, North Carolina State and Oregon State. Broussard was a high school coach in Southern California before coaching at Portland State, Washington State and Arizona State.

“We’ve been curious about who is going to be our assistant coaches, the type of direction we will take when they come in,” running back Johnathan Franklin said. “There’s a little curiosity anxiety, but it hasn’t been hard.”

What has been difficult is working with coaches who will not be at UCLA next season.

The changes come as the current staff prepares the Bruins to play Illinois in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 31.

“It’s been kind of hard being out here, knowing our coaches will be gone soon,” Carroll said. “We’re making the best of the situation because we don’t have a lot time left with them.”

Interim head Coach Mike Johnson, the Bruins’ offensive coordinator, would like to stay. “I have to wait and see what happens,” he said Wednesday. “I’ve got to look at all my options and then I’ll go from there.”

Johnson, defensive coordinator Joe Tresey and run-game coordinator Jim Mastro are under contract for the 2012 season. Mastro has already accepted a job at Washington State but is staying with UCLA through the bowl game.

“It’s a situation that is not normal,” Johnson said. “It’s a situation where we’re coaching a football team and some guys don’t have jobs after the 31st of December.”
