Coaches looking for answers on offense

UCLA’s football team gets a week to catch its breath and try to find answers to what have been difficult questions following a 41-20 loss Saturday to California.

Coach Rick Neuheisel said that the coaching staff would reevaluate personnel and schemes with an open date.

“Things we’ve been doing we’ve proven we have not been able to execute,” said Neuheisel, whose team has a 3-5 record overall and is 2-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference. “You have to ask yourself, ‘What can we execute?’ ”

Whether the Bruins can find the right answers, Neuheisel said, “I don’t know. But it’s important to have long discussions even though the discussions might lead back to where we are right now.”

That hasn’t been a happy place on offense.

Quarterback Kevin Craft continues to struggle. The offensive line and running backs have been unable to generate a ground game.

Chris Forcier will get a chance at quarterback this week.

“I think Kevin has given everything, and I think there still is great football left for him,” Neuheisel said. “No one on this staff is giving up on him. That doesn’t mean Chris Forcier won’t be part of the solution.”

Forcier struggled earlier this season with learning the offense, but Neuheisel said, “He has worked hard and understands his opportunity may be coming.”

Neuheisel also said Osaar Rasshan may get a look at quarterback.
