USC right tackle Kevin Graf could return against California

As teammates have shuffled between positions to his left and his right, center Marcus Martin remains a constant for USC’s offensive line.

“I just try to help everybody and provide as much assistance as I can for the guys around me playing new positions,” Martin said. “I just try to be the support player.”

Martin, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound junior, moved to center this season after starting 20 games at guard.

On Saturday at California, he will be in the middle of a line that might feature the return of right tackle Kevin Graf.

Graf suffered an ankle injury against Utah on Oct. 26 and was sidelined for last week’s victory at Oregon State.

In Graf’s absence, coaches moved sophomore Max Tuerk from left guard to right tackle, senior John Martinez from right guard to left guard and inserted junior Aundrey Walker at right guard.

Against Oregon State, the Trojans rushed for 242 yards in a 31-14 upset at Corvallis, Ore.

Graf, a three-year starter, returned to practice this week.

Interim Coach Ed Orgeron said Thursday that coaches would continue to monitor the senior’s progress through Saturday.

“If Graf’s going to be healthy, he’s going to be our starting right tackle,” Orgeron said. “There’s no question about that.”

The recent shuffling, however, has benefited the team, Orgeron said.

“That’s a positive, to have several options,” he said.

Orgeron praised the line’s play after the victory over Oregon State, but Martin said there was room for improvement.

“We had a pretty good performance overall,” he said. “We can always tighten up communication.”

Williams’ status

Defensive end Leonard Williams returned to practice after sitting out the last two days rehabilitating a shoulder injury.

Williams, however, did not participate in all drills and Orgeron said the sophomore was “very questionable” for Saturday’s game.

J.R. Tavai has played linebacker the last few games, but he could return to end if Williams is unavailable.

Confidence boost

Cornerback Kevon Seymour got his first interception against Oregon State.

Now the sophomore wants more.

“The confidence is there,” he said. “So there’s more to come.”

Seymour and the Trojans will face a receiving corps that includes sophomores Chris Harper and Bryce Treggs, who have 62 and 61 catches, respectively, and freshman Kenny Lawler, who caught three touchdown passes last week against Arizona.

Morgan has surgery

Tailback D.J. Morgan underwent knee surgery Thursday, Orgeron said.

Morgan, a fourth-year junior, had been slowed by injuries since last spring and had not played this season.

Morgan had two previous knee operations. He had major reconstructive surgery after suffering an injury while playing at Woodland Hills Taft High. He also had an arthroscopic procedure early last season.

Morgan rushed for 163 yards as a freshman, 201 as a sophomore in 2012.
