NCAA gets emails in probe of USC

Share

The Los Angeles County assessor’s office has turned over to the NCAA work emails from a former appraiser who has said that he provided cash and perks to former USC athletes while they were still in school.

Chief Deputy Assessor Santos H. Kriemann said the NCAA made its request about a week ago.

The Times reported last month that Scott Schenter, a key figure in the ongoing corruption scandal at the assessor’s office, said that he gave football player Joe McKnight the use of a car and basketball player Davon Jefferson cash, which could be a violation of NCAA rules.

The Times obtained Schenter’s work emails from the assessor’s office under the California Public Records Act. A May 2008 email from Delta Air Lines to Schenter includes a receipt for his purchase of a $625 flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans. The listed passenger: “Joe McKnight.” Schenter also told The Times that he gave McKnight a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which was referred to in a 2009 email from an automobile insurance agent.

USC informed the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA when it was made aware of the allegations.

Real Madrid wins as Ronaldo gets a hat trick

Real Madrid took charge of the Champions League’s toughest group thanks to a hat trick from Cristiano Ronaldo, while AC Milan kick-started its campaign with a rare away win at Zenit St. Petersburg.

Ronaldo had his second straight three-goal match to earn Madrid a 4-1 victory at Ajax in Group D, with Karim Benzema scoring the other for the Spanish champions on an amazing overhead kick.

Manchester City is languishing at just one point from two games in that group after a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund courtesy of Mario Balotelli’s late penalty kick.

Milan needed a late own goal to seal a 3-2 win at Zenit in Group C and is two points behind Malaga, which won 3-0 over Anderlecht.

Arsenal and FC Porto also have perfect starts after wins Wednesday.
