Tillman’s Number Retired in Win

The Arizona State Sun Devils gave Pat Tillman a fitting tribute Saturday night at Tempe, Ariz. No doubt the unassuming Tillman would be even more pleased that the Sun Devils won the game.

Dozens of Tillman’s former college teammates joined his family and 60,319 fans for a halftime ceremony honoring Tillman. He starred at Sun Devil Stadium as a collegian and as an Arizona Cardinal in the NFL, then walked away from his professional contract to join the Army Rangers. He was killed in combat in Afghanistan in April.

Senior quarterback Andrew Walter passed for 332 yards and five touchdowns -- including three in the first 11 minutes -- to carry Arizona State to a 45-28 triumph over Washington State.

The 20th-ranked Sun Devils, 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference, eliminated the Cougars (4-6, 2-5) from bowl consideration.

Tillman’s widow, Marie, was presented with the first Pat Tillman Patriot Award by Bob Lichtenberger, national commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The award will be presented annually to a member of the military.

“From football to fatigues, Pat Tillman was a warrior,” Lichtenberger said during a short ceremony.

Tillman’s No. 42 jersey was retired, and fireworks were launched as his name was unveiled on the press box.

Earlier this year, the Sun Devils and Cardinals helped create the Pat Tillman Memorial Scholarship, which provides scholarships for Arizona State athletes and business students. Tillman’s family established the Pat Tillman Foundation, which is selling No. 42 Sun Devil jerseys as part of its efforts to raise funds for various community endeavors.

No. 5 California 42, Washington 12 -- J.J. Arrington ran for 84 of his 121 yards in the second half and Aaron Rodgers shook off a slow start to throw two touchdown passes and help the Golden Bears (8-1, 6-1) rout the Huskies (1-9, 0-7) at Seattle.

Arrington, who entered as the nation’s No. 4 rusher with a 161.8 average, has gained at least 100 yards in all nine games, a school record.

The Pac-10 record is 11 by USC’s Marcus Allen in 1981, when he won the Heisman Trophy.

Arrington is 45 yards from breaking Chuck Muncie’s 29-year-old school record of 1,460 yards rushing.

Arrington also is on target to become Cal’s first conference rushing champion since Joe Kapp in 1958.

Casey Paus completed 20 of 44 passes for 328 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown for Washington, which trailed by only 14-12 early in the third quarter.

Oregon State 24, Stanford 19 -- Derek Anderson passed for 334 yards and three touchdowns at Palo Alto, and the Beavers (5-5, 4-3) kept their bowl hopes alive by defeating the Cardinal (4-6, 2-5) for the fourth time in a row.
