Dodgers call up Erisbel Arruebarrena, demote Carlos Triunfel

Erisbel Arruebarrena will return to the Dodgers lineup after being called up from triple-A Albuquerque. Arruebarrena will likely serve as a sub for Hanley Ramirez, who has been battling a series of injuries this season.

Infielder Carlos Triunfel had himself a rough game Wednesday afternoon, so rough the Dodgers decided to return him to triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday after only a five-game stop and call up Erisbel Arruebarrena.

This is the second call-up for Arruebarrena this season. The Cuban infielder went four for 13 in his first spell with the Dodgers, returning to Albuquerque when the Dodgers brought up infielder Miguel Rojas, who thus far has been sensational.

Triunfel started at shortstop Wednesday and pretty much never looked comfortable. He committed one error, could have been charged with another and dropped the ball on a play at second. And he’s hitting only .154.

Arruebarrena reportedly has an excellent glove, and with Hanley Ramirez seemingly battling some minor injury all the time, the Dodgers need someone besides Rojas who can fill in at shortstop. Ramirez (calf) is back in Thursday’s lineup for only the second time in 10 games.

When Arruebarrena was returned to Albuquerque the first time last month, he started off going 0-for-9 for the Isotopes. Since then, he’s hit in 17-of-18 games (.410). Overall he’s hitting .357 in 20 games at triple-A, after hitting just .208 in 25 games for double-A Chattanooga.

He is mostly here, however, for his highly-touted glove. The Dodgers signed him to a $5-million, five-year deal in February.
