Dodgers send down Chris Withrow to make room for Hyun-Jin Ryu

And the dial spun and landed on Chris Withrow.

This one hurt more than most, but someone had to be moved Wednesday when the Dodgers activated Hyun-Jin Ryu off the disabled list to start against the Mets in New York.

So it befell Withrow, the only reliever with options remaining aside from closer Kenley Jansen.

The Dodgers like Withrow, a hard-throwing right-hander, and would prefer to keep him, much as they had wanted to keep left-handed reliever Paco Rodriguez, who was sent down earlier. Withrow throws hard and seems cool under pressure, though not all of his numbers were sterling this season.

Withrow has a 2.95 earned-run average and has continued to strike people out this season (11.8 per nine innings), but his walks have skyrocketed.

Despite pitching only 21 1/3 innings, he’s tied with Paul Maholm for most walks on the team (18) and it’s the only reason his WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched) has gone from 0.95 last year to 1.31 this season.

However, Withrow figures to be the first reliever called up when the next injury hits the bullpen. Ryu is returning after resting and rehabilitating a sore shoulder. He last started on April 27.
