The Dodgers scratched ace Clayton Kershaw from Sunday's start because of an inflamed back muscle.

Kershaw complained of tightness after throwing during Tuesday's workout at Dodger Stadium. An MRI examination Wednesday revealed inflammation in his back, according to the team.

The Dodgers did not immediately announce a replacement starter for Sunday's game, the domestic opener against the San Diego Padres and a national ESPN broadcast. The team said Kershaw's next start would be determined by how he progresses when he resumes throwing next week, an indication the Dodgers do not expect him to go on the disabled list.

Kershaw, the defending Cy Young winner, went 6-2/3 innings in the Dodgers' season-opening victory in Australia last week.
