Hyun-Jin Ryu makes triumphant return in Dodgers’ 4-3 win over Mets

That’s called a nice return. Particularly when you’ve been out for almost a month and didn’t so much as make a single rehab appearance.

But Hyun-Jin Ryu pretty much pitched like he’d never been away – which is to say very well – in his return Wednesday, leading the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Backed by three solo home runs from Adrian Gonzalez, Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez, Ryu threw five scoreless innings before giving up a two-run homer in the sixth.

Supported by a strong local South Korean contingent, Ryu was dominant early. He ended up finishing the sixth inning, throwing 89 pitches in his return. He allowed nine hits and a walk, striking out nine.

Ryu (4-2) pushed his road scoreless streak to 33 innings before Curtis Granderson singled and first baseman Eric Campbell hit a homer with two outs in the sixth.

Ryu had been out with a sore shoulder, but looked so strong in a bullpen session and simulated game that the Dodgers decided to bypass the usual rehab start. He last started a game April 27.

Gonzalez gave Ryu a 1-0 lead in the second, hitting his 12th home run, this one off Mets rookie Jacob deGrom. Puig and Ramirez hit consecutive homers in the top of the sixth off DeGrom (0-2).

After Campbell pulled the Mets to within one, the Dodgers got something of a gift run in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Chone Figgins doubled and was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Dee Gordon.

After reliever Jeurys Familia walked Puig, he got Ramirez to hit a comebacker that probably should have resulted in a double play. Familia threw Puig out at second, but his throw was too late for the Mets to turn a double play and Figgins scored what proved to be the winning run.

Brandon League and Brian Wilson followed Ryu and each threw a scoreless inning. Closer Kenley Jansen gave up a run in the ninth when Juan Lagares tripled and scored on a groundout. But Jansen struck out David Wright to earn his 13th save.
