The Dodgers put pitcher Josh Beckett on the disabled list Tuesday, hoping a short rest now can help him avoid a prolonged absence later in the season.

Beckett left Sunday’s game after five innings after aggravating a sore left hip while running the bases. He acknowledged after the game the hip has bothered him for several weeks.

Beckett might have to miss only one start, because the Dodgers can include the All-Star break in the minimun 15 days a player must spend on the disabled list.

Beckett, 34, ranks third in the National League with a 2.26 earned-run average. He is in 14th major league season; this is his 16th stint on the disabled list.

To replace Beckett on the roster, the Dodgers recalled right-handed reliever Pedro Baez from triple-A Albuquerque.
