Yasiel Puig sounded on Friday night as if he was resigned to the reality that he will have to continue playing with discomfort in his left hip.
The right fielder said he has played with discomfort since June 7, when he made an awkward slide as he tried to break up a double play in Colorado. He said he receives treatment from the medical staff before each game.
“I continue to play like this because I have to support my teammates,” Puig said in Spanish.
Puig said his condition hasn’t worsened and that what he was feeling is tightness, not pain.
Puig said he wasn’t concerned that he might develop a serious injury by continuing to play with the condition.
“I’m not thinking about that,” he said. “I’m just thinking of getting treatment and giving the best of myself on the field. I try to play all nine innings. Today, I couldn’t. If I’m given the opportunity to play tomorrow, I’ll try to complete all nine innings.”
