Around the horn: Kris Bryant replaces Ernie Banks as youngest Cub to hit 3 HRs in a game

Kris Bryant hit three home runs Monday, becoming the youngest player in Cubs history to hit three in one game, narrowly edging Ernie Banks. Bryant was 24 years, 185 days old Monday, Banks was 24-195 when he did it in 1955…. Bryant also became the first player in modern MLB history to have three homers and two doubles in one game…. The Cubs are 27-21 since starting the season 24-6….

Miami starting pitcher Jose Fernandez has a career record of 32-12. At home he is 24-1…. Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz have bone spurs in their pitching elbows but hope to put off surgery until after the season….

The Cardinals have removed a struggling Trevor Rosenthal as their closer and will go with a committee of Kevin Siegrist, Seung-Hwan Oh and Jonathan Broxton. Rosenthal, who was 0-2 with a 14.14 ERA in June before his removal, said, “The last three times I went out there, I feel like I was right there. I had good stuff. I was getting ahead of hitters. There was some bad timing, some bad luck mixed in, things I can’t control, but my mind-set was in the place it needs to be out there. I was confident.” …

Teams trailing by at least four runs heading into the ninth inning are 3-452 this season…. The Indians are one of only four teams in the history of the franchise to win at least 12 games in a row. None of the other three made the playoffs (1922, 1942, 1951)…. Last Wednesday was the 26th anniversary of Fernando Valenzuela’s no-hitter. Dave Stewart threw one that day too…. The Baltimore Orioles hit 56 home runs in June, setting a major league record for most homers hit in June….

Reds outfielder Jay Bruce has a limited no-trade clause in his contract but said he would be willing to waive it if he is dealt to a playoff contender. The Yankees, Marlins and Indians, among other teams, are currently on his no-trade list…. Speaking of Bruce, according to mlbtraderumors.com, the top five players most likely to be traded before the deadline: Bruce, Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers outfielders Ryan Braun, Braves starting pitcher Julio Teheran and A’s third baseman Danny Valencia…. Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill told the Miami Herald that Derek Dietrich, hitting over .300 with an on-base percentage near ,400, will continue to get plenty of playing time even after Dee Gordon returns from his suspension in late July.
