Adrian Gonzalez only Dodger to lead early All-Star voting

Adrian Gonzalez may seem reserved, but that hardly means he’s going unnoticed.

In the first round of results for the National League All-Star team released Wednesday, Gonzalez easily leads all first basemen.

Gonzalez is a four-time All-Star, but hasn’t earned the honor since 2011 with the Red Sox. Gonzalez has received 929,016 votes this far, almost doubling his current runner-up. The Cubs Anthony Rizzo has 489,255 votes.

Gonzalez, who is among the N.L. leaders in most offensive categories, is the only Dodger to lead the voting at his position. The Cardinals, the only team in the league with a better record than the Dodgers, have four players currently leading at their positions.

The last Dodger named as a starting All-Star first baseman was Steve Garvey back in 1980.

Rookie Joc Pederson, tied for fourth in the N.L. with 12 home runs, is running sixth among outfielders. Howie Kendrick, in his first season in the National League, is third at second base with 385,427 votes, though well behind leader and ex-Dodger Dee Gordon’s 934,249 total, which even tops Gonzalez.

Gordon even has more votes than his Miami teammate Giancarlo Stanton, who is third in the outfield with 746,926.

The only other Dodger even listed in the early results is Yasiel Puig, who is 12^th among outfielders (322,756) despite appearing in only 11 games because of a hamstring injury.

In the goofy voting system now used by Major League Baseball for the All-Star team, fans can vote up to 35 times online. All paper ballots have been eliminated this season for the game to be played in Cincinnati.
