Until a few days ago, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Yasiel Puig’s season was over. But Puig -- who has been out since Aug. 28 because of a strained hamstring -- made enough progress in his recovery to be lifted from the disabled list. And on Saturday night against the San Diego Padres, he’ll be back in the starting lineup.

“He hasn’t played in a long time at this point,” Manager Don Mattingly said. “He played a couple of instructional league games, obviously, and we all know those aren’t big league games. We’ll see what he looks like. Yasiel is a guy that’s been able to come into spring training and look really good.”

Mattingly plans to start Puig on Saturday and use him either as “a double-switch or coming off the bench” Sunday. The manager also mentioned that he hasn’t “set any rosters yet” for the postseason, and no decision on Puig’s availability against the New York Mets then had been made.

In 77 games, Puig is hitting .256 with 11 home runs and 38 runs batted in.
