Braves drop the Dodgers, 3-2

Alberto Callaspo had a chance to be hero in his first Dodgers at-bat, but flew out to end game

KEY MOMENT: In a 1-1 game with a runner on third base, reliever Adam Liberatore unleashed a 96-mph fastball to Freddie Freeman. It whizzed well over catcher A.J. Ellis' head. Andrelton Simmons of the Braves raced home from third base and Ellis' throw had no chance to get Simmons.

AT THE PLATE: Alberto Callaspo had just been traded to the Dodgers from the Braves and had a chance to be the hero. With the Dodgers trailing, 3-2, with a runner at first base, Callaspo was called to pinch-hit with two outs in the ninth inning. He flew out to center field. The Dodgers scored in the fourth inning, when Justin Turner singled to drive in Jimmy Rollins and in the ninth on Alex Guerrero's home run. Joc Pederson contributed two hits and is seven for his last 13 at- bats.

ON THE MOUND: After Zack Greinke's six innings, Yimi Garcia pitched a scoreless seventh inning. But the bullpen ran into trouble in the eighth. Chris Hatcher gave up a leadoff single to Simmons and walked the next batter. Liberatore got two quick outs before the wild pitch. He then gave up a ground-rule run-scoring double to Nick Markakis to make the score 3-1.

ON THE BASES: After Greinke beat out an infield single with two outs in the fifth inning, he stole second base easily. The next batter, Pederson, singled and Greinke took a big turn around third base. His run represented the go-ahead run, but he thought better of a potential collision at the plate. The next batter, Rollins, grounded out.

URIBE TRADE: The team officially announced the completion of the trade that sent Juan Uribe and right-hander Chris Winslow to the Braves. In return, the Dodgers received infielder Callaspo, left-handers Ian Thomas and Eric Stults, and minor league right-hander Juan Jaime. Before the game, Andrew Freidman, the Dodgers' president of baseball operations, said Uribe had requested a trade to a team where he could get more playing time. "His agent reached out and said, 'Juan wants to play,' which we get and we respect, kind of responding to, 'If you guys can trade him he'd like to play.' " Uribe said he did not ask for anything.

EXTRA BASES: Outfielder Scott Van Slyke has been dealing with what the team characterized as a minor back injury and has been out of the lineup since Monday. ... On Wednesday, the Dodgers moved around the three pitchers acquired in Tuesday's trade. The team optioned Thomas to triple-A Oklahoma, assigned Jaime to extended spring training and designated Stults for assignment.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Mike Bolsinger (3-0, 0.71 ERA) will face St. Louis Cardinals right-hander John Lackey (2-3, 3.18) on Friday at 5 p.m. PDT at Busch Stadium. TV: SportsNet LA; Radio: 570, 1020.
