An X-ray on Yasmani Grandal’s right ankle came back negative, but Grandal still sat out Sunday’s series finale against the Padres. Grandal fouled a ball off his ankle on Saturday.

“He’s sore,” Manager Dave Roberts said. “We’re relieved that the X-rays were negative.”

A.J. Ellis replaced Grandal behind the plate. Roberts said Grandal could “in an emergency, play defense.” The team did not fly Austin Barnes into San Diego as a precaution. Grandal assured Roberts he could play.

But if Ellis and Grandal leave the game, Roberts explained, his emergency catcher was Yasiel Puig. Or Chris Hatcher. Or Kenley Jansen.

“You guys would have fun with that one,” Roberts told reporters, laughing, as he discussed the prospect of Puig catching. “We don’t need anymore headlines.”
