AT THE PLATE: Matt Kemp’s run-scoring single in the first inning moved the Dodgers in front, 1-0. But they didn’t score again until the seventh, when Yasiel Puig doubled in a run and Adrian Gonzalez had a sacrifice fly — a play on which Puig was thrown out trying to advance to third.

ON THE MOUND: Dan Haren was charged with four runs and six hits over four-plus innings against the lowest-scoring team in baseball. He served up a two-run home run to Alexi Amarista in the second inning and back-to-back run-scoring doubles to Chase Headley and Carlos Quentin in the fifth.

THE LINEUP CARD: Scott Van Slyke started in center field for the second consecutive day against a right-handed pitcher, raising questions about Andre Ethier’s standing on the team. Manager Don Mattingly said he started Van Slyke because Ethier was dealing with “soreness all over the place” and not because he has demonstrated an increasing lack of range in recent weeks. “He’s had some leg issues, and he’s having some other issues, so we’re just trying to make sure going into the [All-Star] break that we can get him out of that and feeling good,” Mattingly said. “And on the back side of that, Scotty’s played well and he deserves his opportunities, too.”

WELCOME BACK: A day after returning from the disabled list, Carl Crawford returned to game action when he pinch-hit in the fifth. Crawford struck out, but remained in the game as part of a double switch.

UP NEXT: Paul Maholm (1-4, 5.18) or Red Patterson (0-0, 1.93) will face the Padres and Ian Kennedy (7-9, 3.71) at Dodger Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m. On the air: TV: SportsNet LA; Radio: 570, 1020.
