Adrian Gonzalez: ‘I wasn’t chirping’ at Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright

To Adrian Gonzalez, this was no longer a Mickey Mouse controversy.

On Monday, after the Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright said Gonzalez had heckled him from third base.

“Mickey Mouse stuff,” Wainwright said.

We are in L.A., so Mickey Mouse stuff does go,” Gonzalez quipped in response late Monday. “You know, Mickey Mouse is only an hour away. It fits us.”

On Tuesday, however, Gonzalez said he was not thrilled with how the issue had turned into a full-blown media controversy. He also said he wanted to make one thing perfectly clear: He was not heckling Wainwright.

Gonzalez was on third base with two outs in the fourth inning. He said Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach had yelled that he should be ready to run in case Wainwright threw a wild pitch. He was not, he said, jeering at Wainwright to throw a wild pitch.

“I wasn’t chirping at him,” Gonzalez said. “Wally said, ‘Curve ball in the dirt, make sure you go.’ I said, ‘Curve ball in the dirt, I go.’ ”
