Dodgers put A.J. Ellis on DL; Matt Magill starts for Hyun-Jin Ryu

There are a lot of roster moves the Dodgers could make right now, but only one is happening, and sorry, it’s not the sexy one.

With Matt Kemp on the disabled list and Carl Crawford coming out of Saturday’s game with a painful leg cramp, the Dodgers are in dire need of another outfielder. And there’s this Yasiel Puig guy down at double-A Chattanooga that a lot of people are excited about.

But before Sunday’s game in Denver, the only new face in the clubhouse was right-hander Matt Magill, who was called up from triple-A Albuquerque to start in place of left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu against the Rockies.

To make room for Magill, the Dodgers placed catcher A.J. Ellis on the 15-day disabled list with his left oblique strain. The Ellis move is retroactive to May 30th.

Ryu took a comebacker off the front of his left foot in his last start, and although it’s not broken, it is plenty sore. And it’s his push-off foot.

Ryu said Saturday he wasn’t much interested in starting unless he felt completely healthy. The Dodgers are hoping he only has to miss one start.

Ellis becomes the 13th Dodgers player to be placed on the disabled list through the first third of the season, and this is already the 16th time they’ve had to use the DL.

Magill, 23, will be making his fifth start for the Dodgers this season. He is without a decision, posting a 5.50 ERA and 1.72 WHIP. He last started for the Isotopes on May 25, throwing six scoreless innings.

No other roster move is expected Sunday, though more are likely coming soon. The Dodgers could activate Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) on Monday, and are still operating down one outfielder even if Crawford recovers quickly.

Puig remains the popular choice, but the Dodgers may not have been excited about calling him up Sunday and having him make his major-league debut in Coors Field’s cavernous center field.

Magill’s call-up could be a one-day deal. Meanwhile, Scott Van Slyke is starting in left field Sunday for Crawford.
