Only one reason Dodgers to wear alternate road jersey

Share

This is how it works in that Asgardian realm where major sports franchises reside:

Alternate = money.

Hey, rainbow bridges aren’t cheap. So the Dodgers have announced they will sometimes wear alternate road jerseys that have “Dodgers” in script across their chests. Sometimes, they’ll go with “Los Angeles.”

Ugh, I’m old school on this one, preferring the Dodgers -- and every other major league team -- proudly wear the name of their home city on road jerseys. Maybe they’re concerned people will mistake them for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

“Because we are equally proud of our iconic brand name and the city we represent and with the number of Dodger fans across the country, we felt it important to have two sets of road jerseys to feature both the team name, as well as Los Angeles,” Lon Rosen, the Dodgers’ executive vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a release.

Blah, blah, blah. What’s important here is to sell more jerseys. It’s no coincidence that a couple hours after the Dodgers sent out their press release on the alternate road jerseys that they tweeted … they were now on sale!

It is a business, of course, and no doubt there are fans somewhere who will gobble the jerseys up. It certainly beats those hard-to-look-at baby blue jerseys in 2011.

Now if only Matt Kemp can bring back the hammer of Thor.
