Beamer, Virginia Tech "very" interested in Warhill's Osterloh
Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer and offensive line coach Curt Newsome visited Warhill High this week to inquire about junior Parker Osterloh, the Lions 6-foot-7, 270-pound offensive lineman.
"They're very very serious about Parker," Warhill coach Billy Jarvis said in describing Virginia Tech's interest. "There aren't many guys his size who run a 4.71 (second) shuttle."
Osterloh ran that time at the prestigious U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio, Tex. earlier this month. The invitation-only event included about 500 of the nation's top juniors.
Jarvis said interest in Osterloh has been high, with coaches from Virginia, Maryland, Old Dominion, Richmond and William and Mary visiting the school recently. James Madison already has offered Osterloh, who was enthused to hear of the visit from Beamer.
"It's exciting," he said. "Head coaches don't visit schools every day."
Osterloh started for Warhill on both sides of the line this past season, helping the Lions to a 7-5 record and the program's first playoff berth (and victory). He started at tight end in 2011, catching seven passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.
The Hokies, like everyone else, are recruiting him as an interior lineman.
"Parker has very long arms, so he'll probably be an offensive tackle in college," Jarvis said. "We like playing him at tight end, because he gives a big target for our quarterback, and he'll play there next season for us if our young linemen can step up and fill in (for three graduating senior linemen) on the inside."
It remains to be seen whether Osterloh will be offered by Tech and join Lafayette's Thomas Smith, a senior wide receiver who will play for the Hokies after prepping for a year at Fork Union. The possibility exists of an instate battle for Osterhloh's services between rivals Virginia and Virginia Tech.
"When Coach Beamer comes to the school, that's a big deal," Jarvis said. "Coach (Chip) West (an assistant at Virginia) comes here all the time to talk about Parker."
