Hampton has dominated the series 32-9-1 since it began in 1969, but the last three games have been decided by a total of 10 points.
Oct. 25, 2008: Behind Tron Martinez's 157 yards in the first half, Hampton led 23-7. Bethel scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter, but the Crabbers were able to hang on -- barely -- for a 23-21 win.
Oct. 16, 2009: In the first overtime game between these teams, a missed extra point by Bethel led to Hampton's 20-19 win. The game wasn't much prettier than Darling's soggy field. "Kind of like those old Hampton-Bethel games," Crabber coach Mike Smith said.
Bethel comes into this game after a 30-27 overtime loss to Woodside. After struggling in the opener, the Bruins' offense has come around behind RB Sam Bennett (147 ypg, 13 TDs) and QB Frank Brown.
But Hampton has looked virtually unbeatable. The Crabers have outscored the opposition 283-26, 260-12 the last five weeks. The offense is averaging a PD-leading 250 ypg.
