Portsmouth—With Tropical Storm Hanna brewing blustery winds at Joe Langston Stadium, a little Lamb brought homestanding Norcom a 33-12 non-district victory over Heritage.
Junior quarterback Deandre Lamb, who is 5-foot-9, completed nine of 19 passes for 130 yards and accounted for four of the Greyhounds' five touchdowns. His favorite target was senior Rashawn Finney, who caught two of the scoring passes.
The Hurricanes got on the board first, on their second series, after stopping Norcom (2-0) on downs.
Sophomore Andrew Warren capped a seven-play scoring drive by finding Demetrius Craighead on a 5-yard fade route.
That gave Heritage (1-1) a 6-0 lead with 4:21 left in the first, but the Hurricanes failed on a 2-point conversion try.
Norcom then proceeded to reel off the next 27 points. The Greyhounds answered Heritage's touchdown with an eight-play drive.
Junior running back Anthony Blount accounted for 40 of the drive's 55 yards on two runs, and Lamb connected with Finney on an 8-yard scoring pass with 35 seconds left to tie the game at 6.
After forcing a Heritage fumble on the Hurricanes' 36, it only took Norcom three plays to push the advantage to 14-6. Lamb found Demarcus Hoggard on a 13-yard pass to the 23.
On the next play, Lamb found Liron Atkins behind the secondary for a scoring pass.
Warren threw the first of his two interceptions on Heritage's next play, and Norcom responded with a pair of runs by Blount, the last one covering 6 yards for a 21-6 lead with 7:23 left in the half.
For the night, Warren was 5-of-14 for 86 yards.
The Greyhounds capped the scoring binge late in the third quarter, going on a 95-yard scoring drive.
Lamb hit Finney on a 22-yard pass for a 27-6 lead with 1:59 left.
Heritage showed some spunk after that as Craighead returned that kickoff 56 yards to the Norcom 37.
Seven plays later, Warren sneaked in from the 1 on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut the margin to 27-12.
On that drive, he scrambled 12 yards a first down and hit Sean Maycox on a 17-yard pass to the 4-yard line.
The Greyhounds' defense rescued their offense after Norcom fumbled on its first play after that score.
On fourth-and-8 from the Heritage 43, Warren connected with Craighead for what would have been a first down. But as the ball came to Craighead, junior defensive back Kameron Mack came in contact with Craighead and jarred the ball loose.
Norcom took over on downs and capped a 57-yard drive on a 4-yard connection from Lamb to Carlos Mills with just less than four minutes left.
