Ducks don’t have much fun in 4-1 loss to Islanders

Maybe the Ducks should have forced Teemu Selanne to make an appearance.

Selanne seemed to be their good-luck charm whenever he was shown on the video board last season to energize the crowd. But he wasn’t visible on a Selanne promotional night Friday, and neither was the game the Ducks needed in a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders at Honda Center

The Ducks couldn’t support a strong game by goalie Anton Khudobin and saw their six-game point streak end with an 0-1-2 homestand.

“We just need to keep staying positive and bring that fun energy to the rink,” Ryan Kesler said. “The last couple of days it hasn’t been fun coming to the rink, to be honest. We’ve got to bring this positive energy back to this team like it was last year, and we’ll be fine.

“It’s a mind-set, and we’ve got to get back to having fun and it being loose around here. It’s like walking on eggshells around here right now.”

The Ducks’ first regulation loss since a 1-7-2 start also dropped them to five points out of third place in the Pacific Division. Khudobin, who made 25 saves, didn’t paint as gloomy a picture as Kesler but was blunt.

“We’re close to each other, I think we’re just playing right now with half brain instead of whole brain,” Khudobin said.

Khudobin made two terrific saves on Islanders captain John Tavares in the first and third periods. He anchored the Ducks’ second-ranked penalty killing unit for most of the night and made two big saves at the end of the second period to keep it a 2-1 score.

Khudobin made 13 saves in the first period, the best of them on Tavares during a power play.

“We hung our goalie out to dry tonight,” Cam Fowler said. “He stood on his head or it could have been seven or eight goals. He made some incredible saves and they still put up four on us. That’s a cause for concern.”

The Ducks still rank last in scoring after their 10th game of one or no goals.

Corey Perry grabbed a piece of Ducks history in the second period when he passed Paul Kariya for sole possession of second on the franchise all-time goals list with 301.

Perry got two tries during a massive, extended scrum of bodies in front of the net and scored during a two-man advantage to cut the lead to 2-1.

But that was it. Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau benched his fourth line in the third period. That included Carl Hagelin, who played a season-low 5:07.

Boudreau and his players are still searching for the full game after the past three have ended in two overtime losses and this defeat.

“We’re in pockets right now,” Boudreau said. “We play good in pockets and good in little times. We have two lines going and not two lines going. … It’s getting together and doing it all the time is what we have to do.”

Stoner plea deal

Clayton Stoner reportedly intends to plead guilty in an illegal grizzly bear hunting case near the British Columbia coast.

Neither Stoner nor his lawyer were required to attend a hearing Friday, but the prosecution told a judge that Stoner’s lawyer expressed Stoner’s desire for a plea, according to the Canadian Press. Stoner’s lawyer could not be reached.

The Ducks defenseman this year was charged on five counts for knowingly making a false statement to obtain a hunting license, hunting out of season, hunting without a license and unlawfully possessing dead wildlife.

Stoner has not commented on the case other than an initial statement of innocence.
