NFL draft is rife with betting opportunities

After weeks of testing and analyzing college football’s top eligible players, 32 teams will finally make their choices known with the start of this year’s draft today at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Other than the Miami Dolphins selecting Michigan offensive lineman Jake Long with the No.1 overall pick, the rest of the draft is a mystery. That’s why Las Vegas oddsmakers have made so many draft bets available.

Here are some updated wagers, according to Bodog- life.com: Who will the St. Louis Rams select with the No. 2 pick? Virginia’s Chris Long (11-10), Louisiana State’s Glenn Dorsey (4-5) or field (7-2); who will the Atlanta Falcons select with the No. 3 pick? Boston College’s Matt Ryan (5-6), Dorsey (even), Long (9-2), Ohio State’s Vernon Gholston (10-1) or field (4-1).

Who will the Oakland Raiders select with the No. 4 pick? Arkansas’ Darren McFadden (2-3), Long (4-1), Dorsey (6-1), Gholston (7-2) or field (3-1); who will the Kansas City Chiefs select with the No. 5 pick? Long (4-5), Gholston (5-4), Virginia’s Branden Albert (3-1), Boise State’s Ryan Clady (4-1) or field (7-2).

The draft also has its share of proposition bets. Here are a couple listed at Bodoglife.com: Will the New England Patriots keep or trade the No. 7 overall pick? Trade up (7-2), keep the pick (2-3) or trade down (13-10); will the Atlanta Falcons make a trade during the first round? Yes (+110) or no (-150).

Will the Cincinnati Bengals trade Chad Johnson during the NFL draft? Yes (+300) or no (-600); what round will the Philadelphia Eagles draft their first wide receiver? Round 1 (7-5), round 2 (even), round 3 (4-1), round 4 (9-2) or other (5-1).

Pro Hockey

While Detroit is listed as a -200 favorite for today’s Game 2 with Colorado at +170, the over/under combined goals bet may be worth a close look.

After seven combined goals were scored in the Red Wings’ 4-3 victory in Game 1 on Thursday, the over/under combined goal total is five for today’s game at Joe Louis Arena.

That’s interesting when you consider that in nine of the last 10 games played by the Avalanche, there have been at least five combined goals scored.

And, in seven of the last 10 games played by the Red Wings, there have been at least five combined goals scored.

Boxing

Oscar De La Hoya may no longer be regarded as one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters, but he’s still that rare boxer who can attract bets in any role.

Just take a look at De La Hoya’s scheduled upcoming fights.

De La Hoya is listed as an overwhelming favorite (-1700) against Steve Forbes (+900) for their bout May 3 and then he’s a strong underdog (+225) for his Sept. 20 fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (-285).
