THE NFL

Four NFL teams have already been busy

Trades and signings have improved the outlook for Vikings, Browns, Raiders and Eagles.

* Cleveland: Because they traded away most of their picks, the Browns don’t have a selection in the first three rounds of the draft. Still, they made some intriguing moves this off-season, bolstering their defensive line with Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams, and giving re-signed quarterback Derek Anderson another weapon in receiver Donte Stallworth.

* Minnesota: The Vikings needed an elite pass rusher – one they probably couldn’t get with the 17th pick – so they grabbed a great one in Kansas City’s Jared Allen, trading their top selection to the Chiefs to secure him. They also improved their secondary with former Bengals safety Madieu Williams, and added a deep threat in ex-Bears receiver Bernard Berrian.

* Oakland: The Raiders opened their wallet in a big way, signing big names such as cornerback DeAngelo Hall, receiver Javon Walker, safety Gibril Wilson, defensive tackle William Joseph, cornerback Duane Starks and tackle Kwame Harris. Not only that, but they have the No. 4 pick. Talk about an extreme makeover.

* Philadelphia: The Eagles nabbed the biggest defensive prize in free agency by signing former New England cornerback Asante Samuel, who immediately improves a unit that intercepted just 11 passes last season. Less heralded – but likewise important – Philadelphia signed a very good pass rusher in Chris Clemons and a solid linebacker, Rocky Boiman.
