Performer of the Year
Katie Hertsch, Winters MillThe senior earned county Performer of the Year honors for the third consecutive year. Unlike previous years, however, Hertsch broke a personal drought at the Class 2A-1A state championships and collected her first state title when she won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 29.08 seconds.
That victory capped a sweep of the 1,600 at the West regional, Monocacy Valley Athletic League Piedmont Division and Carroll County levels.
Hertsch, who took the 800 at the Piedmont Division meet, also claimed the 500 (1:24.23) and 800 (2:27.99) at the county championships. Her time in the 800 is a county record.
Coach of the Year
Rob Johnson and Henry Adami, North CarrollThe Panthers are no strangers to success after capturing the county outdoor track title last spring and winning back-to-back indoor crowns in 2002 and 2003.
Still, North Carroll did not have the services of distance standout Katie Hursey, who swims during the winter. That did little to deter the Panthers, who pooled points from their sprinters, high jumpers and pole vaulters to stand on the winners' podium at the county championships.
