SMITHFIELD ——In their three previous victories, the Warhill Lions' defense had to pick up for an offense that struggled to put points on the board, averaging fewer than 16 points per game.
Friday, the Lions didn't have to be special on defense to win the game.
Three Warhill quarterbacks threw for touchdown passes, and DeVonte Dedmon added 138 rushing yards as the Lions (4-3) defeated the Smithfield Packers(1-6) 35-21, ruining the Packers' homecoming game.
Dedmon scored touchdowns from 34 and 49 yards out before throwing a touchdown pass from 49 yards out to all-purpose back Reggie Lipscomb as well. Lipscomb and Seth Thompson also added touchdown passes, Thompsons' coming with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter to tight-end Parker Osterloh to put the game out of reach.
It looked like the Packers were up for the upset early on, moving the ball down the field with ease on their first drive that ended with a Jermaal Miles touchdown pass to Duquan Lambert to give the Lions an early lead. The defense did hold Lipscomb and Kale Delbert to well under their season averages in terms of yards-per-attempt and yardage, but there were simply too many big plays made by the Lions to send Smithfield to its fourth straight loss.
While Lipscomb struggled to run the ball, he made the play of the night: His 49-yard touchdown pass, catching a tipped pass behind his head as he raced down the field to give Warhill a 28-14 lead with 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter that seemingly put the game out of reach. The Packers responded as Marquis Childress returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to bring the Packers within a score. Charles Sharon intercepted a pass at midfield to give the Packers the ball and an opporunity to tie the game, but an offensive pass-interference and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty quickly put an end to the Smithfield drive.
Warhill will have a chance to solidify it's playoff position against Tabb next Friday, while the Packers travel to New Kent and will try and play spoiler the rest of the season.
