SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS

DIVISION I

Wild-card games, Wednesday, 3 p.m.

Loyola 1, Long Beach Wilson 1 (Loyola advances, 4-2 on penalties)
Nick Mackey scored the equalizer for Loyola (15-5-8) with 12 minutes left in the match. Jemari Roberts scored the goal for Wilson (16-9-3) in the first half. The game headed into overtime with controversy. When it looked like Loyola had stopped a late offensive surge by Wilson, the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of regulation. As the referee reached for the whistle, the ball actually landed in front of a player from Wilson who took a shot that went in. The score, however, had occurred after the whistle. Loyola goalkeeper John Bucknall, a sophomore, deflected two shots in penalty kicks to help his team advance. The Cubs will travel on Friday to Orange County to play No. 1 Santa Margarita (15-3-3) at 3 p.m. It's a rematch of last year's Division I finals that ended in a 1-1 draw.
