SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL

All finals

DIVISION I

Long Beach Wilson 3, Thousand Oaks 0

The Bruins assured themselves of the mythical girls' soccer national championship with the victory in the Division I final at Downey High.

Senior midfielder Samantha Baker put a shot from just inside the penalty area inside the right goal post in the 51st minute, sophomore forward Emily Dillon put in a rebound of a shot by Rene Mendiola in the 74th minute and Samantha Prochnow scored in the 80th minute.

Goalkeeper Lacey Heck recorded the shutout.

The second-seeded Bruins (28-1-5), Southern Section Division I co-champions, were ranked third by StudentSportsSoccer.com entering the game. Sheldon Shealer wrote on the Website Friday that Wilson would be named national champion with a victory Saturday, then confirmed it with a call to Wilson's Coach Jason Kirkwood Saturday night.

"Today was the first day where we finished a lot of chances," said Kirkwood, whose team had scored eight goals in its seven previous Southern Section and Southern California Regional playoff games.

The loss ended the unlikely run by the Lancers (21-5-3) through the inaugural regional playoffs.

Thousand Oaks, the Southern Section Division II champions, were seeded eighth in the eight-team tournament, but the Lancers upset top-seeded Encinitas Torrey Pines, 1-0, in a quarterfinal Tuesday, and fourth-seeded San Clemente, 4-2 on penalty kicks after regulation play and overtime ended in a scoreless tie, in a semifinal on Thursday.

Torrey Pines had been ranked first by StudentSportsSoccer.com and San Clemente third.

"I don't think 3-0 was indicative of how hard the girls battled," Thousand Oaks Coach Geoff Raives said. "I thought that we gave them a run for their money. We just ran out of magic. The only difference between us and them is things went their way. The got a great shot from [Baker].... I don't know any goalkeeper who's going to save that."

DIVISION II

San Diego Cathedral 3, Granite Hills 1

The top-seeded Dons scored in the opening five minutes of each half at Downey High.

Coco Goodson, who has signed with Texas, opened the scoring in the second minute. Freshman midfielder Danielle Brito gave Cathedral (24-3-4) a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 44th minute. Senior Tamara Chagas scored the Dons' final goal in the 49th minute.

Junior Louise Baartz headed in a pass from Lauren Milani in the 71st minute for the second-seeded Cougars (22-7-2), the Southern Section Division IV runner-up.

"I think they just connected their passes more today, and we couldn't connect," Baartz said. "We tried, but it just wasn't working out today. It wasn't our day."

The Dons outscored their opponents, 33-3, in the San Diego Section Division III playoffs and Southern California Regional Division II playoffs.

DIVISION III

La Jolla The Bishop's 2, Oaks Christian 0

Freshman Kalie Davidson broke up a scoreless tie with a goal in the 69th minute, then added a second goal three minutes later at Downey High.

Davidson headed in a throw-in from Laurel Casey on the first goal. On the second, Annie Kadota sent a cross to Davidson, who hit the ball with the outside of her foot and it spun into the net, under the left hand of Lions goalkeeper Noelle Salter.

"We had like two slip-ups on defense and they happened to capitalize," Oaks Christian forward-defender Kelsea Smith said. "Their forwards did a great job of finishing. We had opportunities to score too. We just couldn't put one in the back of the net."

The top-seeded Lions (25-4-2) played without freshmen Jaciara Mello and Alexandra Courtnall for a second consecutive game because of club commitments, while sophomore Kelly Johnson was in Texas for an Olympic Development Team tournament.

Oaks Christian Coach Jan Hethcock said he thought throw-ins made the difference.

"Their throw-ins are what hurt us -- that girl [Casey] that could throw the ball 40 yards," Hethcock said. "She was here and my 40-yard thrower was in Texas. She couldn't quite throw from Texas to here today."

The second-seeded Knights (19-4-1) were also shorthanded. Hannah Brown, their No. 1 goalkeeper, tore an anterior cruciate ligament in her knee March 1 in The Bishop's 1-0 loss to Coronado in the San Diego Section Division IV final. Her backup, Christi Rodriguez, broke a thumb in practice Wednesday, forcing freshman Dana Christenson to play both the regional semifinal and final.

The Knights were also without three other starters and two reserves, who were on various trips, and their coach, Brian Quinn, who was with his daughter at a college orientation, according to assistant coach Lu Snyder, who coached the team in his absence.

Quinn coached the San Jose Clash of Major League Soccer from 1997-99.

San Clemente kept its momentum going.

Three days after getting a share of the Southern Section Division I title, the Tritons easily beat City Section champion Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 3-2, Tuesday at San Clemente High on the first day of the Southern California Regional.

The game was not as close as final score would indicate as the Tritons (23-3-6) outshot the Conquistadors 14-6. San Clemente got the scoring started early when junior Barrett Bestard converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute.

El Camino Real (14-3-8) tied the game on a controvesial play in the 34th minute. Nicola Berry scored the goal, but San Clemente coaches argued with officials wether the ball crossed the goalline.

San Clemente retook the lead a minute later, however, and then went up 3-1 right before halftime on an incredible bending shot by freshman Frannie Coxe from about 20 yards away.

El Camino Real scored their other on their forth shot in the 76th minute.

San Clemente will host Thousand Oaks on Thursday at 5 p.m. after TO upset #1 Torrey Pines, 1-0, with a penalty kick in the last minutes of the game.
