DOWNEY

Championship Semifinals

San Pedro 2, Sonora 0 (6 innings, time limit)
Taylor Petty (6-0) allowed one hit over two games as San Pedro (7-0) moved into Monday's championship game with a pair of victories.

Petty allowed an infield single to the first batter she faced Saturday and did not allow another baserunner in the opener, striking out 14, as the Pirates rode a big fourth inning to an 8-0 win over JSerra. Hannah DeGaetano and Holly Stevens hit back-to-back home runs to open the inning, and later in the frame Perelini Koria's grand slam was followed by a Kailee Cuico solo shot. Koria's home run was the 33rd of her career, five short of Jennifer Lizama's state record.

In the semifinal, Petty spun a no-hitter and Koria drove in the game's only runs with a two-out single in the fifth as San Pedro defeated Sonora, 2-0.

San Pedro, ranked sixth in The Times' preseason poll, has won 30 straight games dating to last year. That streak, as well as Petty's 25-game win streak, both figure to be sternly tested when the Pirates face La Palma Kennedy in the tournament title game Monday. Kennedy is not only top-ranked by The Times, but also is ranked number one in the nation by Student Sports Softbsall.

San Pedro 4, Garden Grove Pacifica 1
The Pirates (4-0), ranked sixth by The Times, posted one of their -- and one of the City Section's -- biggest wins in recent memory, scoring four runs in the final two innings to earn the victory at fourth-ranked Pacifica (0-1).

"Pacifica and [La Palma] Kennedy are always the class of the Southern Section," said San Pedro coach Tony Dobra. "They were the only teams to beat us last year, and to be able to come in and do this on their field -- it's very satisfying. It's good for us and good for LAUSD to come out and show the level City teams can play at."

Pirate ace Taylor Petty struggled against Pacifica last year, pitching with a 104-degree temperature and allowing two runs in three innings in what turned into a 9-0 Mariner win. Petty came in healthy this year and shone, limiting Pacifica to five hits and striking out 10 as she improved to 3-0 and extended her personal win streak to 22.

The host Mariners opened the scoring in the fourth, as Anessa Steward led off with a double, moved to second on a one-out sacrifice by Christina Zambrana, and scored on Kayla Anderson's single to short.

San Pedro left runners on base in each of the first four innings against Pacifica starter Katie Tamayo, but didn't crack the scoreboard until the sixth, batting around and scoring three times on four hits against Mariner relievers Kristin Little and Krystian DeWitt. Holly Stevens and Kourtney Costa had RBI singles in the frame, sandwiched around a Trista Chavez sacrifice fly that gave the Pirates the lead. Kailee Cuico added a solo homer in the seventh off of Tamayo to complete the scoring. The win was the 27th consecutive for San Pedro, the two-time defending City champion.
