It has been a year of the underdog. None of the top-seeded teams in the Southern Section Division 1 or 2 baseball playoffs have advanced to the championship games Friday at Dodger Stadium.
The same goes for the City Section Division I final; No. 5 Chatsworth is facing No. 6 Birmingham on Saturday.
It means anything can happen. But any advantage, as usual, goes to the team with the best pitcher.
Santa Margarita has UCLA-bound Griffin Canning ready to go against Hudson Hughes (9-0) of Santa Ana Foothill in the Southern Section Division 1 final at 8 p.m.
Aliso Niguel has another UCLA commit, junior Kyle Molnar, set to pitch in the Division 2 final against Temecula Valley at 5 p.m.
Palm Desert, the No. 1 seed in Division 3, has junior Andrew Bash, who has a 9-2 record and 1.01 earned-run average, ready to go against La Puente Bishop Amat and UC Santa Barbara-bound Alex Garcia at 2 p.m.
In the City Section Division I final at 1 p.m. Saturday, nine-time champion Chatsworth will go with freshman Tommy Palomera while Birmingham counters with junior Jonathan Russomano.
It will be the 41st time in the last 42 years that a San Fernando Valley team has won the City's Division I championship.
In Division II, Dorsey will be seeking its first City title since 1958 in a 10 a.m. game against Van Nuys.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
