The quarterback is the first junior to win the Gatorade award. Barkley, who has committed to USC, was earlier named the nation’s top prep football player.

Matt Barkley of Santa Ana Mater Dei High has become the first junior to win Gatorade’s national high school athlete of the year.

Barkley, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound football quarterback who will be a senior this fall, received his award during a ceremony in Los Angeles this afternoon. He won the boys’ award. The girls’ winner was Chanelle Price, an 800-meter runner from Easton, Pa.

Barkley, who has already verbally committed his intent to accept a football scholarship from USC, passed for 3,560 yards and 35 touchdowns last season.

He has been a starter at Mater Dei since he was a freshman, earning praise for his ability to throw deep passes with great accuracy. He has excelled in the classroom as well, earning a 3.9 grade-point average.

Earlier this year Barkley received a Gatorade award for being the nation’s top high school football player.
