HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL PLAYOFF PREVIEWS

Simi Valley takes on defending champion Valencia in Division I

Top-seeded Simi Valley is trying to become the section’s first unbeaten team since 1985.

Southern Section-Toyota championship playoff games conclude Saturday at Barber Park in Irvine.

Here are previews of Saturday’s games:

DIVISION I

Simi Valley (30-0) vs. Valencia (28-5-1), 6 p.m. – Top-seeded Simi Valley is trying to become the section’s first unbeaten team since 1985, when Ocean View finished 32-0. Senior shortstop Sam Fischer (.476, 34 runs, 32 RBIs) and junior outfielder Brianna Stephan (.400, 26 runs, 20 RBIs) pace the offense. Opportunistic and ranked No. 1 in the state, Simi Valley scored a 1-0 semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Norco with a two-out rally against one of the Southland’s marquee pitchers, Teagan Gerhart. It was Simi’s third 1-0 victory in four games. Sophomore Amanda Oliveto (13-0, 0.31 ERA) has given up only two runs over the last 74 innings, one over the last 46.

Third-seeded Valencia, the defending champion, is led by Tennessee-bound Jessica Spigner (28-5, 0.64 ERA; .475, 37 runs, 37 RBIs). The battle-tested Vikings are loaded throughout their lineup, including shortstop Madison Shipman (.408, 29 runs, 22 RBIs) and Lelani Bernardino (.425, 36 runs, 18 RBIs). Simi Valley won its only other title in 1993; Valencia won in 2007, lost in the 2005 finals.

DIVISION IV

La Puente Bishop Amat (22-8) vs. Huntington Beach Ocean View (27-1), 12:30 p.m. – The difficulty of their schedules is reflected in both teams’ records. Bishop Amat lost its only other finals appearances, in 1993 and 1994. Ocean View won its only appearance, in 1985, to complete a perfect 32-0 season behind pitcher Jackie Oakley. Fourth-seeded Ocean View’s Holli Floetker (17-1, 0.64 ERA) is a hard-throwing sophomore who also does the job at the plate, having batted .372 with 22 runs and 26 RBIs. The Seahawks are led offensively by Nikole Afusia (.505, 40 runs, 39 RBIs) and Autumn Martinez (.330, 29 runs, 24 RBIs).

Bishop Amat has its own near-perfect pitcher in Amy Lwin (18-8, 1.99 ERA), who retired the first 19 batters in a 1-0, 11-inning victory over Mission Hills Alemany in the quarterfinals. Jessica Traxler (.490, 27 runs, 33 RBIs) led an offense that scored 54 runs in four playoff games, including a 7-4 victory over a tough Downey team in the semifinals. Those were the only runs Amat has given up in the playoffs.

DIVISION V

Torrance (28-4) vs. North Torrance (23-10), 10 a.m. – The top three teams from the Pioneer League were the top three seeded teams in the division. No. 1 Torrance is led by pitcher Jessica Moon (13-0), who pitched 15 innings Tuesday in a 3-1 semifinal victory over San Dimas in which Britney Helm had the game-winning hit for the second consecutive game. Moon had 15 strikeouts, including the side in the last inning. Her sister, Jamie Moon (.394, 17 runs, 26 RBIs), has led the offense, along with Karina Scott (.449, 28 runs, 17 RBIs). Torrance defeated third-seeded North twice in league, including 3-2 in the finale to avoid a three-way tie for first place with El Segundo. North beat El Segundo in the semifinals, 3-2, as Sammy Alvillar drove in the tying run and scored the winning run in the seventh inning. North hasn’t been to the finals since losing the 4-A championship to Huntington Beach Marina in 1979.

DIVISION VII

Canoga Park Faith Baptist (20-5) vs. Calabasas Viewpoint (18-5), 3:30 p.m. – Top-seeded Viewpoint is led by Michelle Lesser (.562, 45 runs, 51 RBIs, eight home runs) who has only four strikeouts in 84 plate appearances. She is ably complemented by Brook Berka (.475, 23 runs, 37 RBIs ), a junior, and her sister, Blaire (.500, 35 runs, 16 RBIs), a sophomore. The teams split their Liberty League games, with Viewpoint winning, 3-1, and most recently losing, 3-0. Second-seeded Faith Baptist has batted .390 as a team and has five players who batted .419 or higher, including Cherith Simmons (.494, 34 runs, 14 RBIs) and Melissa Tindall (.421, 40 runs, 39 RBIs). It won a title in 2002 in its only other championship-game appearance.
